This is an original 1881 black and white wood engraving of the naval battle between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama of France, which took place during the United States Civil War. The USS Kearsarge was originally built at the Portsmouth Navy Shipbuilding Yard of Kittery, Maine, prior to setting sail toward Europe where this historic battle took place. Under the direction of Captain John Winslow (top inset), the United States Navy won the battle. In the lower image, Admiral David Glasgow Farragut is pictured. Farragut served as a flag officer for the United States Navy during the American Civil War.
