This is an original 1881 black and white wood engraving of "Study of the Emperor, Winter Palace." This nineteenth century image depicts the Emperor's Study within the Winter Palace, located in St. Petersburg, Russia. Located on the banks of the Neva River, the Barouqe Palace was the main residence of Russian Tsars beginning in the 1760s.

The wood engravings are comprised of a diverse range of images, including ethnic portraits, cityscapes and architectural and religious landmarks. Each image is deftly engraved and printed on lightweight, lightly coated off-white stock, uniquely capturing the atmosphere of St. Petersburg and other cities of present-day Russia, Denmark, Germany and Poland.
