Period Paper is pleased to offer a collection comprised of diverse 1881 steel engravings of historic battles and portraits of significant European leaders, and wood engravings documenting historic and contemporary nineteenth century culture and scenes throughout what, at the time, was the Russian Empire.
The admirable steel engravings of the collection are printed on a heavy weight, off-white uncoated stock; the combination of ink and paper producing a soft, tactile visual appearance that captures the exceptional linear and tonal quality of the engravings which include portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander I of Russia and Catherine the Great of Russia, as well as scenes from the historic battles leading to the exile of Napoleon from France and the ascension of Russia as a European political and military power.
The wood engravings are comprised of a diverse range of images, including ethnic portraits, cityscapes and architectural and religious landmarks. Each image is deftly engraved and printed on lightweight, lightly coated off-white stock, uniquely capturing the atmosphere of St. Petersburg and other cities of present-day Russia, Denmark, Germany and Poland.
The superb pieces of this collection offer the opportunity to own a beautiful piece of artwork and an exceptionally rendered document of Russia in the nineteenth century.
