This is an original 1884 black and white in-text wood engraving that depicts a Tungusic man named Ossip Schumachoff arriving at the death site of a giant, frozen mammoth. It was common for the peoples of Siberia and other arctic regions to cut off mammoth parts and sell them, so by the time Russian explorer Mikhail Adams arrived to collect the remains it was suspiciously missing both of its tusks.
