1888 Chromolithograph 18th Century Costume Fashion Consulat Europe LCH5

This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts a myriad of clothing styles from the later 18th century in Europe as they appeared in a German fashion publication. At the time, European fashions had multiple points of inspiration. In the Mediterranean, archeological findings in Italy and Greece brought in long, draping neoclassical lines; in France, the aftermath of the French Revolution harbored both a return to simpler fashions and natural figures, as well as a plethora of eccentric outfits propagated by the Merveilleuse and the Incroyables, who were part of an aristocratic subculture hell-bent on enjoying the intoxicating new liberties of the post-monarchy during the French Directory Period. Fashions spread, and intermingled, producing many of the styles visible here.
