This is a rare, original 1888 color chromolithograph which illustrates some of the fashions in both the daily and military life of ancient Greece.
Key Elements in Each Panel
Top - 1,6. Young Greek men dressed in chlamys, short clocks, which were common attire in Athens - 2. Woman wearing a pallium, a light mantle - 3. Man in a podere, a foot-length robe, also covered in a pallium - 4. Woman wearing two belts, a strophion under her chest and a zoma around her waist - 5. Woman dressed in a catasticos, or zodiote, which was a motley multicolored fabric - 7. Man wearing a large pallium normally associated with heros and gods.
Bottom - 20. Helmet discovered in Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli - 9,15. Helmets with a Phrygian form - 11,22. Greek helmets similar to those found in Pompeii.
