This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts a variety of indigenous peoples from the mountains and plain of India during the 19th century.

Key Elements in Each Panel

Top - 1,2,3. Dancing girls, or bayaderes, covered in jewelry from the tops of their heads to their ankles - 4. Koli worker balancing a basket on her head - 5. Garro mother and her daughter, from the Assam hills.

Bottom - 6. Mountain dwellers from the Assam hills, wearing knotted shawls instead of the traditional saris worn by most Indian women - 7. Two woman on a pilgrimage, who will generally purchase a new cooking pot every day as they believe that any object looked upon by a member of an inferior caste automatically becomes unclean, and therefor unusable - 8. Koli woman - 9. Manipuri inhabitant, wearing a turban which would have been representative of her caste. The darker color of her skin indicates that she belongs to one of the inferior castes from the region of Bengal.
