This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts some of the military uniforms of the Janissary muskeeters who made up the Polish Royal Guard during the reign of John III Sobieski in the 17th century. The Janissaries were a powerful force. Originally trained to fight for the sultans of the Ottoman Empire, they became too politically powerful for their own good and actually lost momentum as a fighting army. This oversight allowed John Sobieski to victory over the Turks during the Polish-Ottoman War, and he retained captured Janissaries for his own personal guard. Back in the Ottoman Empire, the Janissaries were eventually disbanded by the Turks after a horrific uprising that left members of the Ottoman nobility dead.
