This is an original 1890 black and white in-text wood engraving of the house of a decurion (a member of the city senate) in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy. Pompeii was partially destroyed when the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. The sudden eruption and burial of the city in ash left much of the city preserved as it was in ancient times.
