This is an original 1890 black and white in-text wood engraving of the peristylium of the quaestor's house in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy. A quaestor was a public official who supervised financial affairs. Pompeii was partially destroyed when the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. The sudden eruption and burial of the city in ash left much of the city preserved as it was in ancient times.
