Capernaum was a fishing village during the time of the Hasmoneans on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Excavations have revealed ancient synagogues at this site. One church is said to be the home of Saint Peter. The town was also referred to in the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of Mark.
