This is an ultra-rare original 1893 color cover from the Chicago "The Inter Ocean" supplement of the Chicago World's Fair director-general George R. Davis. Davis and Burnham designed the fair and took inspiration from earlier fairs. Shown dangling from Davis' robes is a model of the Statue of the Republic. The Statue of the Republic was sculpted by Daniel Chester French, and stood 65 feet tall. Unfortunately, it lit on fire in 1896 and was destroyed. Today, there is a replica of the sculpture in Jackson Park built in 1918 in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Exposition.

Period Paper has obtained arguably one of the most rare, exclusive collections of original color images of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (The World's Columbian Exposition). Over the last several years we have acquired and sold thousands of items from this Exposition, and we continue to offer lithographs, prints, and photogravures. However; this exclusive collection is not offered publicly anywhere else. The original front and rear covers from Chicago's coveted The Inter Ocean Illustrated Supplement from 1893 are stunning in their size, color saturation, and condition. This was the very first color supplement produced on a high speed newspaper press, developed in late 1892 in preparation for the Exposition. The Inter Ocean was released 3 times per week at times during the Exposition. Most of the cartoons were produced by a pair at opposite ends of their careers-- Thomas Nast and Art Young. Period Paper holds the largest collection of original 1893 Chicago World's Fair original print ephemera, fine art, and historical images in the world. This is by far the most rare of all the collections related to the fair we have discovered.

The World's Columbian Exposition was held from May to October 1893 in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. In competition with many other cities, Chicago was finally designated the official site and the Exposition was built on 630 acres in and around Jackson Park. It was a spectacular display of progress and prosperity, and included among its many wonders were electrical displays, exhibits from other countries, and a popular amusement area on the Midway Plaisance with carnival rides-- among them the first Ferris Wheel. Most of the fair's architecture was based on classical design which gave the area around the Court of Honor the name "The White City."
