This is an original 1895 black and white steel engraving of a portrait of Charles Smith Hamilton, who, following his graduation from West Point Military Academy, served in the Mexican-American War, as well as the U. S. Civil War. Following the war, it is said that Hamilton took interests in the agriculture and paper manufacturing industry, and was later commissioned as U. S. Marshal for the state of Wisconsin. Hamilton Place in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin was named in honor of Mr. Hamilton, and Sophia Street in Fond Du Lac was named in honor of his wife.
