This is an original 1896 black and white halftone print of the Franco-Swedish General Bernadotte, preparing to retreat his army away from a French advance towards Berlin by building bridges over rivers behind his forces. Prussian soldiers, who held Berlin in great esteem, as it is their nation's capital, refused to retreat.
