This is an original 1897 black and white wood engraving of the Mikado (Japanese Emperor) receiving homage from the Shogun. The relationship between Mikado and Shogun was an interesting and tangled piece of politics. While the Emperor was still considered to be the absolute ruler of the Japanese people, the Shogun was the true seat of power in the Tokugawa (Edo) Period.

While power in Japan has shifted numerous times, the concept of the Mikado, or more correctly Tenno, has been an immutable truth, even in today's Japanese society, the emperor still sits as the supreme symbol of Japanese divine sovereign and is the only ruler still referred to as Emperor in the world.
