Pettijohn's Breakfast Food.
Around 1854, Eli Pettijohn built a flour mill along the Minnehaha Creek, which he named ÒThe Richfield Mills.Ó It was while working at this mill that Pettijohn got the idea to create a breakfast food, a commodity not yet manufactured. Pettijohn went about personally selecting the best grains to produce a superior product, and in 1870, he relocated to San Francisco so he could be closer to what he considered to be the most premium source of wheat. It was at this time that Pettijohn manufactured the original PettijohnÕs Breakfast Food. Later, Pettijohn returned home to Minneapolis and sold his company to The American Cereal Company of Chicago. In 1901, Quaker Oats became a parent company.
