This is an original 1901 black and white halftone print of a portrait of English essayist and social theorist Harriet Martineau in her later years when she lived in Westermere in the Lake District of Cumbria, England.

By this time in her life, Martineau was well traveled, studied and connected. Having visited multiple locales of Europe and the United States, she had made the acquaintances of Charlotte Brontë, Monckton Milnes, Florence Nightingale and Charles Darwin. Her socio-politcal writings were highly sought after and often controversial.
