This is an original 1901 black and white halftone print of a portrait of wealthy, English writer Matthew Arnold. He was known as a "sage writer" who would write in such a manner that his opinions were put forth as fact that should be taken on face value. He was of prominent birth, high education and "sometimes neighbor" to famous poet William Wordsworth in the Westermere, England, but lived mainly in Liverpool. Despite his status of only living part time in the Lake District of Cumbria, England he would later be considered a leader of the English Lake Poets.
The Literary Association of the English Lakes or the English Lake Poets were a collection poets and writers who lived in the picturesque Lake District of England in the 19th and 20th centuries. They were associated based simply on their subject matter, being inspired by the Lake District, and by their residence to that region of England. Notable scribes from this association were William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Dorothy Wordsworth.
