This is an original 1902 halftone print of the before and after pictures on the shore of St. Pierre Harbor.

It is said that after this 1902 volcano eruption, the entire city of St. Pierre was completely demolished, leaving only a few survivors, which included a prisoner who was in a dungeon type jail cell, a man who lived on the edge of the town that escaped with severe burns and a little girl who fled on boat to a nearby cave. The girl was later found injured and unconscious a few miles down from the island.
