This is an original 1902 black and white halftone print of the Vallon Obscur (Dark Valley) just North of Nice in the French Riviera. In days of antiquity this gorge in the Alpes-Maritimes Department was an important military road as the stream pictured here recedes with the tides of the Mediterranean Sea removing any traces of occupation.
