This is an original 1902 black and white wood engraving of Byzantine Emperor, Justinian I, or Justinian The Great, flanked by his nobles and advisors. Justinian's rule lasted nearly 40 years, and in that time, he enacted numerous notable policies, including "renovatio imperii", or the restoration of the Roman Empire. Increasing the military might of the Eastern Roman Empire, he campaigned across Northern Africa against the Visigoths, securing a link to the Atlantic Ocean, and also reclaimed Italy from Ostrogoths after nearly 50 years of barbarian rule.
