This is an original 1904 black and white halftone print that depicts muezzin loudly reciting the
adhan, or call to prayer, from the minaret of a mosque. This would allow nearby Muslims to prepare and gather for
salah (prayer). Historically, this position was given to blind men so as not to violate the privacy of the open courtyards in the surrounding area, however in modern times speaker systems and amplifiers attached to minarets provide an easy way to deliver the call to prayer without needing to actually go up there.
