This is an original 1905 color print of the Green Cloister of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy. The entrance to the Spanish Chapel can be seen. The basilica is famous for its frescoes that were painted by the masters of the Gothic period and Early Italian Renaissance. The church was built on the site of a 9th century oratory of Santa Maria della Vigne.

Goff, Robert Charles

Robert Charles Goff (1837-1922) was an Irish printmaker and painter. He became a soldier at eighteen, but left the Coldstream Guards after he became a colonel in order to concentrate on his artwork. He learned the process of etching from a fellow officer and etched over 200 plates. He traveled to Britain, Italy, Egypt, and Japan in pursuit of new subject matter and often worked in watercolors. He eventually settled into a villa in Florence, Italy. Goff later died in La Tour-de-Peitz, Switzerland.
