1905 Color Print Scoppio Carro Explosion Cart Easter Florence Italy Goff XGYA2

This is an original 1905 color print of the Scoppio del Carro ("Explosion of the Cart") which is a traditional Easter event in Florence, Italy. On Easter Sunday, a 30' tall cart of fireworks is lit in the street. The cart in the street is lit by the cardinal of Florence from the high altar inside the cathedral. A "good" or successful explosion of the cart is supposed to guarantee a good harvest.

Goff, Robert Charles

Robert Charles Goff (1837-1922) was an Irish printmaker and painter. He became a soldier at eighteen, but left the Coldstream Guards after he became a colonel in order to concentrate on his artwork. He learned the process of etching from a fellow officer and etched over 200 plates. He traveled to Britain, Italy, Egypt, and Japan in pursuit of new subject matter and often worked in watercolors. He eventually settled into a villa in Florence, Italy. Goff later died in La Tour-de-Peitz, Switzerland.
