"La Chapeau de Paille", by Auguste Renoir. .

This is an original 1905 tipped-in color print of a painting by French artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir was the leading painter of impressionist art. He painted figures, especially women and depicted them in a sexual way. Although not sexual, the woman in this image has a relaxed feel. The painting has a very impressionist texture, typical of Renoir.

Renoir, Pierre-Auguste

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a French artist famous for his influence on the Impressionist painting style. As a child he painted designs on fine china, hangings for overseas missionaries and decorated fans before enrolling in art school. Renoir traveled all over drawing inspiration from famous painters and museums, but on one of his trips he contracted health problems. In his later years, he moved closer to the warm Mediterranean coast to ease these problems. He kept painting through his arthritis even though he had to have help placing the brush in his hand.
