Chickering Pianos.

Jonas Chickering first established the Chickering company in 1823. It is thought that the original business was set up at 336 Washington Street in Boston; however, after a fire destroyed it in 1852, the companyÕs factory was rebuilt on Tremont Street in Boston.

In 1843, Chickering constructed a cast iron frame in a concert grand piano. After the piano model was further refined and perfected it received top awards, as well as extremely high accolades during the first International Exposition in Crystal Palace, London in 1851.

Following the Paris Exposition of 1867, ChickeringÕs son Frank, an instrumental partner in the company, received the Imperial Cross of the Legion of Honour from Emperor Napoleon III for his services to the art of music.

During the mid 19th century, Chickering & Sons was the largest United States piano manufacturer.

It is said that many of the Chickering concert grand pianos constructed between the late 1800s to about 1925, have the most rich and powerful sound possible, especially in its bass.

Interesting Fact:

When P. T. Barnum convinced famous Swedish singer Jenny Lind to put on a national tour in the United States, composed of 93 performances, he commissioned Chickering to construct a custom grand piano for her use during the tour.
