1906 Color Print Birket Foster Basilica San Marco Venice Italy Church XAT7

This is an original 1906 color print of the entrance to the Basilica di San Marco (Saint Mark's Basilica) in Venice, Italy. The space above the doorway is filled with glittering mosaics. This magnificent example of Byzantine architecture was built in 828 to store the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist.

The original artwork in this print was created by Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899). Foster was an English watercolor artist and illustrator. He was born in North Shields, England, to a Quaker family. Foster was apprenticed to a wood engraver named Ebenezer Landells in London and worked as an illustrator for books and periodicals. He is also known for his landscapes which he painted as he traveled throughout Europe.
