This is an original 1906 color print of the well in the courtyard of the Doge's Palace in Venice, Italy. The Doge was the chief magistrate and leader of Venice and was elected for life by the aristocracy of the city-state.

The original artwork in this print was created by Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899). Foster was an English watercolor artist and illustrator. He was born in North Shields, England, to a Quaker family. Foster was apprenticed to a wood engraver named Ebenezer Landells in London and worked as an illustrator for books and periodicals. He is also known for his landscapes which he painted as he traveled throughout Europe.
