Period Paper is pleased to offer items from a unique collection of antique map cartography, depicting various Arctic regions that were reached between 1600 and 1883. Some of the maps illustrated were crafted during U. S. Army General Adolphus Washington Greely and his crewÕs polar meteorological expedition. It was upon this ill-fated expedition that Greely and his 25-man crew all nearly died from starvation, hypothermia, drowning, suspected cannibalism, and in one case, a gunshot wound that Greely ordered. Unfortunately for these brave men, only about 5 actually survived the excursion and rescue. These antique maps conjure the compassion, sorrow and hauntings of the exciting and often tragic conditions of the courageous exploration missions of the time.
