This is an original 1906 black and white halftone print of "Devil Dancers." This early twentieth-century image captures a "Devil Dance," a ritualistic ceremony in Sri Lanka predicated upon the belief that certain illness are caused by unseen forces. Known as the "thovil," the ritual is undertaken on both a small, family-centered level, or can include the entire population of a village or town.
