This is an original 1906 two-color halftone print of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. During the War of 1812 it was the sight of its battled-scarred flag that inspired Francis Scott Key (1779-1843), the American lawyer and poet, to write the words to what later became known as "The Star-Spangled Banner." This song became the United States' national anthem in 1931.
