This item stems from a particularly fascinating collection obtained by Period Paper exploring the Norfolk Broads of England. The Broads are a network of lakes and rivers in Norfolk and Suffolk counties and constitute 117 square miles of land. The Broads and surrounding areas are under a significant amount of protection close to that of the national parks and are operated by the Broads Authority. Seven rivers and sixty-three broads comprise the region, and offer a large breadth of wildlife and rare insects.

This piece was illustrated by Southgate, Frank. Artist signature in print - bottom right of image.

Southgate, Frank

Frank Southgate (1872-1916) was an English painter known for his use of watercolors; he often portrayed wildlife and landscapes, but focused particularly on waterfowl and marshes. Southgate studied in Cambridge as well as at the Slade School of Art in London. He was elected as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and exhibited at the Royal Academy on multiple occasions. Unfortunately, Southgate died of heart failure in 1916 during World War I after running two miles with a message to the front-line.
