This is an original 1906 sepia halftone print of the Heap of Abu Zena or Mangas Hisan Abu Zena, which translates to "Abu Zen's Horse's Leap." There is a legend connected to the spot about Abu Zena, an Arab who was riding a horse that was "with foal," and riding it hard and cruel. At this point when he spurred her on cruelly she made a gigantic leap and dropped down dead on the spot. The leap was so tremendous that even Abu Zen was in awe, and marked the leapt distance with two stones. The story got around and everyone who passed the spot would honor the horse by depositing two stones, one on each pile; and the piles grew. But then, the people gave up idolatry to worhip one true God. They thought of their honoring this horse as the worhip of a pagan god and denounced it by throwing stones AT the stone piles and kicking up dust upon it crying out for the demon there to "eat that and get out of our sight."
