This is an original 1906 black and white halftone print of a portrait of Catholic priest and Polish independence activist Father Piotr (Peter) Sciegienny (1801-1890). He wrote a series of political pamphlets that urged peasants in Poland to rise against Austrian and Tsarist oppression and was responsible for organizing the Peasant Union from 1842-1844. He also served as a leader of the Peasant Uprising of 1846, (also known as the Galician Slaughter). He was eventually arrested and was sentenced to hard labor in the Nerczynsku mine.
