This is an original 1906 black and white wood engraving of a portrait of Gen. Józef Dwernicki (1779-1857). He commanded the 3rd Regiment of Mounted Rifles in the Polish Army during the November Uprising of 1830-31 that was fought between Poland and the Russian Empire. He was also a veteran of the Polish-Austrian War and the Napoleonic Wars, where he led the 15th Uhlan Cavalry Regiment during the French invasion of Russia of 1812.
