This is an original 1907 black and white photogravure of a piece by Venetian Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio (c. 1465-1525), who is best known for his conservative, large-scale detachable wall-paintings, which were not as humanistic in nature as the work of his other Italian contemporaries. This particular scene is of the Birth of the Virgin, with a midwife checking the temperature of the water in the basin below the reclined expectant mother.
