This is an original 1907 halftone print of a heart-wrenching pietà by Italian Renaissance artist Lazzaro Bastiano. Most of his contemporaries painted the Virgin Mary simply mourning Christ who is draped across her lap, here we see her taking a more active role--She is pulling up her beloved son, grieving his tragic death with tear-filled eyes.
