This is an original 1907 black and white halftone print of the granite columns on the piazzetta of Venice, Italy. These historic monuments are thought to have been erected around 1268. Atop the right column is the patron saint Theodore (prior to St. Mark serving as the city's patron saint). Atop the left column stands a symbol of St. Mark, which is actually a winged lion creature. It is thought that upon the erection of the columns, the water had been higher, thus the columns would have elegantly framed the city's entry from the sea. Between the columns is the only known place in the area where gambling is permitted. It was also the sight of many public executions.
