This is an original 1907 halftone print of a piece by Venetian Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio (c. 1465-1525), who is best known his conservative, large-scale detachable wall-paintings, which were not as humanistic in nature as the work of his other Italian contemporaries. As might be expected, this particular work is reputed to be only a quarter of the original, and depicts two elegant Venetian woman who appear to be watching something in the distance. On the left side are a pair of unusual platform clogs, or
chopines, which were popular during the 15th-17th centuries. The doves and white handkerchief are both symbols of purity.
