This is an original 1907 halftone print of a piece by Venetian Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio (c. 1465-1525), who is best known his conservative, large-scale detachable wall-paintings, which were not as humanistic in nature as the work of his other Italian contemporaries. Another rendition of
The Death of the Virgin, this one has Christ receiving his mother's soul into heaven while mourners grieve over her corpse below. Most unusually, there are minarets in the background adorned with the crescent moon--Both traditionally viewed as Islamic symbols.
