This is an original 1907 halftone print of a piece by Venetian Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio (c. 1465-1525), who is best known his conservative, large-scale detachable wall-paintings, which were not as humanistic in nature as the work of his other Italian contemporaries. In this composition, rather than produce a conventional Madonna, Carpaccio preferred to portray her simply as a reverent mother watching over his small boy.
