1909 Print Portrait Jewish Army Military Alfred Dreyfus Affair Treason XEJ8
Alfred Dreyfus was a Jewish French army artillery officer until government intelligence informed the relevant parties that Dreyfus was a carefully placed spy, who was relaying critical artillery information to the Germans. Dreyfus was subsequently tried and found guilty of treason and stripped of his army rank. He was then sentenced to life imprisonment on DevilÕs Island. A couple years later, new evidence had resurfaced, which proved that Major Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy was the true traitor. However, the proof was kept under wraps, which raised suspicions of anti-semitism among the French nation. After much support from the media and the public, Dreyfus was pardoned and released from his imprisonment sentence. Upon his freedom, a noble Dreyfus was quoted to have said, ÒThe government of the Republic has given me back my freedom. It is nothing for me without my honor.Ó Dreyfus was soon accepted back into the military and was promoted to the rank of Major. Shortly thereafter, he was knighted and received the coveted French Legion of Honour; though his famous quote still resounded with a feeling of powerful betrayal.
