This is an original 1910 black and white print ad for Campbell's Tomato Soup by the Joseph Campbell Company located in Camden, New Jersey. Herberton Williams in 1898 thought of the red and white color scheme for the soup can, he was inspired by Cornell Universities football uniforms. Historical note: The Campbell's Kids characters were introduced by John Durrance in 1904 and designed by artist Grace Wiederseim. These cheerful little characters quickly became an advertising iconÐÐone of the earliest in advertising history. Another distinctive element of the Campbell's soup logo, besides the familiar red and white label, is the Gold Medallion. In 1900 Campbell's soup won a gold medal in the 1900 Paris Exposition and this medallion was incorporated into the company logo.
