1910 Print Emeryville Shellmound San Francisco Bone Antler Archaeology XGZ9
A shellmound or midden is a wasteland used by previous human settlements, which accumulated with domestic waste containing shells, animal bones, human excrement, vermin and other ecological and human waste products. These pits were originally created by nomadic groups, who generally utilized the disposal area a single time before moving on. However, sedentary communities would use the dumps for extended periods of time. This particular shellmound was located near San Francisco Bay, California.
