Josef Israels
Josef Israels was a well-known Dutch painter of the 1800s, born in Groningen in 1824. He was born of Jewish parentage and destined to be a man of business. His love of art and drawing shone through, and attended a drawing class at the "Minerva" every day after school. His strong interest in art held firm, and eventually he was allowed by his father to choose a career in art. Considered a romanticist, he achieved art that was aesthetic to the eye. He also realistically portrayed humans from a sad, sympathetic point of view. This was somewhat frowned upon in his day. His art is said to "stir the soul."
