Appel, Karel

Karel Appel (April 25, 1921 Ð May 3, 2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and poet. He started painting at age 14 and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s and was a founder of the CoBrA (Copenhagen, Bruxelles, Amsterdam) movement in 1948. AppelÕs parents opposed his art obsession but his distraction was in his favor while he was hiding from the German police who wanted to put him to work during the war. His work was influenced by Picasso and Matisse, which inspired him in 1947 to start working with the assemblage technique. Assemblage is the process of using found materials to make sculpture. He continued his work with CoBrA in Denmark where he drew inspiration from Danish and Nordic Mythology. The CoBrA group started painting the insides of houses, which intensified the exchange of ÒchildishÓ and spontaneous picture language they were known for. After taking so much negative feedback, he moved to Paris in 1950 and then traveled around the world. Before his death in 2006, he established a Foundation to preserve his work and promote public awareness and to educate. A number of his work went missing on its way to the foundation and it wasnÕt until 6 years after his death that they were found in an unused UK warehouse.
