"Le Canal de Kiel"

This is an original 1914 double-page, two-color print of the Kiel Canal in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein which is a 61 mile freshwater canal that connects the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. Construction of the canal began in 1887 and was finished in 1895. The canal was widened between 1907 and 1914 at the request of the Imperial German Navy so that large battleships could pass through it.

Period Paper is pleased to offer an exceptional collection of historic halftone and color prints from 1914. These images of famous places, architecture and cityscapes, monuments, and people provide a fascinating picture of pre-World War I Germany. Many of the images (including battleships, U-boats, Krupp factories and arms) also document the rise of German nationalism and the growing militarization of the German Empire in the years preceding the first global conflict. Sadly, many of these beautiful buildings and cities that survived the First World War were subsequently either damaged or destroyed during the Second World War.
