This is an original 1914 black and white halftone print of a rudimentary World War One scouting device, the Observation Column. While this may seem clever, and perhaps an effective way of spotting enemy forces, it also completely exposes the scout to enemy sniper fire. Eventually scouting methods adapted to trench warfare with periscopes and aviation.
