He was best remembered for his roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. He played the Sergeant of Police in The Pirates of Penzance and the Pooh Bah in The Mikado.

Gilbert, and the composer, Arthur Sullivan, resulted in the production of fourteen comic operas produced at the Savoy Theatre in London's West End, many of which are still produced today.
