There are seven dams on the Kootney River used for everything from electricity to regulation of water flow between the US and Canada. The Lower Bonnington Power Plant generates hydroelectricity in order to supply water to the mines in Rossland. The Upper Bonnington Dam was intended for rerouting the water to allow fish to migrate and improve navigation, but is used for hydroelectricity, instead. The end of the river merges with the Columbian River where the Brilliant Dam was built to regulate the waterflow.
