This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the Saladin Citadel of Cairo, a medieval Islamic structure, built between 1176 and 1183 AD. Also shown is a portrait of Fuad I, who served as the Sultan of Egypt from 1917-1922, and as the King of Egypt from 1922 to 1936. A cityscape of Cairo can also be seen as well as the Sphinx and a pyramid at Giza. Sphinxes were generally used in association with royal tombs and temples. The Great Sphinx of Giza is the oldest known sculpture, dating back to 2558-2532 B. C., and it is the largest monolith sculpture in the world.
